So a group of us went out to see the new film EARTH. You know, its a straight up disney nature film, with darth vader narrating. You know, James Earl Jones with that deep voice. maybe you saw him cut Conan the barbarians moms head off in that one movie? It was a while ago. He's gone soft in his old age I guess.

Anyway, in the movie, this polar bear daddy spends half the film looking for food, and is slowly starving. Later the film follows a bunch of reindeer and gazelles running around swedenavia or scandland, or wherever it is. We follow the herd for a while, meet the grandparents, the baby, spend some serious screen time getting to know everyone in the herd. suddenly, a big hunting wolf starts chasing the herd. It picks out a baby gazelle, and starts chasing it. And we're like "NOOOO!!!! GO BABY GAZELLE, GO! RUN!" of course the gazelle trips and blows it, and the big wolf catches it. It being disney, they cut right before the big spurt of blood.

So, back to the polar bear daddy. We've now met his super cute baby cubs, met the mom, and hes still hard at work out in the ocean swimming around still looking for food by himself. in fact, Now he's starving, and finally finds a bunch of walrus. He goes in for the attack. he goes after a baby walrus, and after seeing this polar bear starving in various shots, on land, at sea, on an ice flow, we're of course cheering "come on polar bear! get that food! gogogogo!!!"

And it being a super cheery movie and all, of course he doesn't get the baby walrus, then lays down and dies from hunger.

Nice one disney.

anyway, how powerful is media that it can make you root for the baby gazelle in one scene, and then in the next cheer on the death of a baby walrus? It so all in how subjects are presented. Framing a discussion is so vital. So often the framing is invisible until I step back and really think- Okay, what are the root assumptions in how that was presented...

Now, the root assumption thats RIGHT is that if charles Feelgood plays an intimate venue, he's going to tear the roof off.
