Have you ever watched something die in slow motion?
Like a way of doing things, slowly fading out of existence?
In music, there is this constant growth, zenith and death cycle. Styles fade in, are exciting for awhile, then
slowly become overplayed and fade. Even the gear itself rises and falls.

I haven't put up a dj mix for quite some time.
I've made the shift to ableton live, and every time I change media for djing, there is a transition period.

For years, it was always vinyl. Then at gigs, you'd see one cd player, off to the side.
Then all the gigs had turntables, and on the outside of those, two really good cd players.

And then I showed up to a gig, where the turntables had been pushed to the outside, and the cd players were the closest thing to the mixer.

Thats when I knew the writing was on the wall for vinyl. Now It's 2010, and I havent seen a turntable at a gig in years. Once in a while, someone will request one, but they're always using it as a serato click track for their laptop.

Well, now I'm off cds and on to ableton live, and I love it. It allows me to dj a set the way I've always dreamed about. I can add as many layers to the music as I want. I have banks of beats that I can replace under any song at any time. I can organize all my tracks, and see them all on one view.

I'm finally feel like I've got my feet under me with ableton live. In no small part thanks to Braden, who's classes on ableton got me up and running. If you're thinking of learning ableton, I'll tell you, get some classes. It really speeds up the learning curve. email Braden at info@16bitdjacademy.com would be my advice.

I've gotten several requests for a copy of the New Years set I played at Nexus, so I went ahead and posted it on my website. Its a peak hour mix, weaving between punchy house tracks and some funky breaks.
